Last Tuesday, The Vibrasonic Experiment presented its third live in session for 2006 at CFRE. It was called a “Nu Gospel Vibrations” session, with the focus on Christian Hip Hop, spiritual R&B, and uplifting Gospel music. The show was not about pushing religion – it focused on new music that had positive lyrics, and an upbeat groove that people could still dance to.

I invited Toronto gospel rapper Apolegetics, also known as Agetics, to deliver his rapid lyrical drill on the microphone. He was amicable and good-humoured, keeping the CFRE booth positive at all aspects of the session.

During the question and answer period, Agetics was very vocal with everything that was on his mind. He got into Gospel music when he was “saved” in Grade seven.

“(That) means I gave my life to God,” he says. “I grew up in a church all my life, but it wasn’t until around that time. It was also when I started getting into Hip Hop.”

Equipped with a strong faith, Agetics attributes his talents to God. He entered into the Gospel Hip Hop scene for one reason.

“I want to use all of my talents for God and in a way that will be pleasing to him.”

Agetics rhymes on topics such as Jesus and his life, but can also switch it up with racism and revenge in his topic palette.

Agetics performed four dazzling rhymes live in on air. Two acapella rhymes, “This World” and “8-bar Free Flow,” showed his linguistic prowess and vivid rhyme style. He adds a little humour to his delivery by changing his vocal pitch to provide emphasis on certain lines.

For the finale, he delighted the listeners with an exclusive five-minute freestyle on Dr. Dre’s instrumental of “The Message,” pulling out subject matter and rhymes like a magician pulling rabbits out his hat. His quick rhyme release allows him to squeeze more than enough words into one four-beat bar.

He has put out a mixtape entitled “Mixed Music Mixtape: Volume 1” for 9 b 4 8 Entertainment. He is currently working on an album to be released in 2006.
